Kingston University invited Summerhill to assist them with a major change project which was the merger of the three faculties of Science, Engineering and Computing in a single new faculty, SEC. The initial work was to deliver coaching services to more than 20 Executive staff and Heads of School affected by the change. The project grew and Summerhill was also asked to facilitate focus groups for consultation and chair task groups for planning change activities.

Such major change was not easy for the University and so a “lessons learned” exercise was undertaken and Summerhill was invited to facilitate the activity so that future change could be planned to be more effective and timely.

The coaching services were independently evaluated after the project and Summerhill  Consulting executive coaches were praised for their work. The reported commented: “All interviewees stated that they would use coaching again and recommend it to colleagues. Kingston University feel that they received a good return on their investment in coaching services.”

We have been working with HM prison Service for over 15 years, supporting the Governors and Management Teams of over 20 prisons in their challenge to become an efficient, effective and decent public sector provider of this vital service to society. We have assisted teams in:

• Opening new prisons
• Changes in the function and remit of a prison
• Successful Turnarounds or poorly performing prisons
• Winning Competitive bids to keep the work in the public sector
• Development of inspiring and practical strategic plans.

Our understanding of the sector, combined with our knowledge of Management and Leadership tools and techniques has enabled us to build relationships that support and challenge management teams to deliver their best. We have provided:

• Team facilitation to build the team and support them through the process.
• Advice on the Management of Change to Governors and leaders.
• Management development to middle and first line managers to provide them with the skills they need.

We have worked with the National Offender Management Service within the Ministry of Justice since it was set up to deliver prison and probation services. We have advised on the Management of Change as they have established a specialist unit to prepare competitive bids to compete with private sector providers. We advised on the processes, structures, roles and responsibilities of the new unit.
